Works update – 19 August 2026

In great news for residents of Ghinni Ghi and Iron Pot Creek, the new $3.3 million Montgomerys Bridge on Iron Pot Creek Road is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Work started on the new bridge at the end of last year, with Council receiving funding for the project under the State Election Commitment Program.

The opening of the new bridge will come as a huge relief to residents living west of the bridge who have faced a 16km detour each way since the old bridge was closed in November 2020 for safety reasons.

All major construction work on the new bridge is now complete, with only the installation of bridge barriers and guardrails, construction of the road approaches and site rehabilitation works remaining.

The completion of Montgomerys Bridge will herald the end of Council’s once-in-a-lifetime $80 million Bridge Replacement Program.

In an extraordinary infrastructure achievement, Council has replaced 110 bridges over the past five years thanks to a funding partnership with the State and Federal Governments.

Work is also progressing on the Clarkes Lane Footbridge, with the abutment poured last week and crews now working on backfilling. The remaining girders are expected to be lifted into place on Friday.

Also on the bridges front, council teams are undertaking structural inspections across the local government area, while the pipe crew is completing drainage works for the Kyogle Recreation Centre project.

Major strides also have been made on flood damage repairs:

  • Lions Road 2022 flood repairs are now completed (slip repairs from 2025 Cyclone Alfred event still to be funded).
  • Gradys Creek Road: Fifty percent of the road now sealed. Stabilisation works will start this week weather permitting.
  • Iron Pot Creek Road: Council continues to monitor the landslip daily.
  • Horseshoe Creek Road: Recent wet weather has delayed work.
  • Baileys Bridge Road: Work is progressing.
  • Gradys Creek Road landslip: Work is progressing.
  • Landslip near Kyogle Bowling Club on Richmond River: Preliminary works delayed due to wet weather.
  • Williams Road landslip: Work has resumed and is hoped to be completed by mid-October.

Council’s road rehabilitation crew is currently working on Lindsay Creek Road, while grading crews are working on Homeleigh Road and in the Cawongla catchment, Bingeebeebra Road, and in the Afterlee catchment. The Jetmaster is patching potholes on streets in Kyogle and on Bentley Road.

Roadside slashing is also occurring along Bently Road and Tabulam Road.

Meanwhile, work continues on highway maintenance, with crews slashing along the Summerland Way and completing batter protection, clearing drains and undertaking pavement widening on the Bruxner Highway.
