Drinking Water Quality
Kyogle Council operates and maintains water supplies for Kyogle and Bonalbo and works with Tenterfield Shire Council to supply water for the Urbenville, Woodenbong and Muli Muli communities.
To ensure our tap water meets the strict Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, as required under the NSW Public Health Act and regulatory requirements, we undertake a comprehensive testing regime. Council also takes part in the NSW Health-sponsored drinking water verification monitoring program.
Kyogle Council is committed to managing its water supplies effectively to provide safe, high-quality drinking water that consistently meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, and consumer and other regulatory requirements. As part of this commitment Council has adopted a drinking water quality policy and drinking water management system.
Discoloured Water
Water may be discoloured from time to time. This may be a result of old pipes, or natural variation in the raw water being extracted. Colour itself is not deemed to be a health issue, but rather an aesthetic issue, according to the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
Brown, red, orange or yellow water
Possible causes
- Sediment (iron, manganese) in the pipe or water main which can be stirred when there is a sudden increase or change in direction of water in the pipes, often after water mains are repaired.
- Not harmful to health.
When this occurs, Council will flush a main after a repair. However, dirty water may still be present in some instances.
Residents are advised to flush taps until water runs clear and avoid doing laundry as the water may stain clothes.
Green or blue coloured water
Possible causes
- Usually copper corrosion from household plumbing.
- May be harmful to health.
If you have this problem, please contact a plumber. The presence of copper can be confirmed by having the water tested.
Milky, white or cloudy water
Possible causes
- Air bubbles in water caused by a sudden change in water flow or direction in the pipes.
- Not harmful to health.
Leave water to sit for 2-3 minutes and they should disappear.
White particles in the water
Possible causes
- Calcium and magnesium carbonates which build up internally in hot water pipes and kettles.
- Not harmful to health. If you are concerned, please contact a plumber.
