Kyogle Local Government Area Declared a Natural Disaster Area

The announcement by the Premier Nathan Rees, that the Kyogle Local Government Area has been declared a Natural Disaster Area has been welcomed by Council. The damages bill caused by the recent extreme weather is expected to be significant, and the assistance from the Natural Disaster Declaration will reduce the financial burden on Council during the clean up and restoration of these damages.

The area is experiencing major disruptions due to flooding and severe storms. At least 55 roads have been affected by flood waters across the Richmond and Clarence catchments. At this stage the extent of the damage is difficult to ascertain, with many roads and bridges still inundated and access restricted. Major slips on Kyogle Road and the loss of bridges on Taveners Road and Larsson Road are already evident. The remainder of the affected roads have experienced significant damage, and it is anticipated that many water crossings will not be trafficable when flood waters recede based on the level of inundation experienced on many of these structures.

Residents are asked to remain patient during this period of recovery. Council's resources are stretched at present, with staff attending to the worst affected areas where access is available. Clean up and restoration of damaged areas will be prioritised and it will not be possible for Council to attend to all affected areas in the short term. Council staff will continue to work to attend to the highest priority repairs.

Residents are asked to contact Council on (02) 6632 1611 during office hours or (02) 6626 6800 after hours to report any damage as this source of information is valuable in determining the extent of damages, particularly in areas where access is restricted.

Please be aware that Flood Warnings are still current for the Clarence and Richmond Rivers. Numerous low level bridges have been inundated, isolating some rural properties. Pumps and livestock should be moved from low lying areas. Council advises that all non-essential trips should be avoided wherever possible, as road conditions are variable and areas where roads have been affected by flood waters can be dangerous and unstable.

If you need emergency assistance as a result of flooding, contact your local State Emergency Service Unit by calling 132 500. For life threatening situations call 000. The Public Information and Inquiry Centre is open to provide information regarding displaced families, road closures, welfare assistance and all other general enquiries on 1800 227 228.

For updates on the situation, please listen to the radio or go to the SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/.

The New South State Emergency Service has produced a Floodsafe guide for rural properties with advice on how to help protect your household and property from floods. Click here for an online link to the guide.
